restaurants, bars, beaches, and many more tips
on how to enjoy Tarifa.

Click Tarifa maps for locations - click phone numbers for contact info

Restaurants

We haven't yet tried all the new places that
have opened recently, so the following
listing is based on our own experience
and friends'  opinion. Keep checking for
updates.

Beaches

Secluded beaches

One of the best is situated between the
Hurricane hotel and Valdevaqueros.
Watch out as there are some rocks in places. Lovely if
you want to sunbathe in peace.

Bolonia. Not quite as secluded  but generally quieter
than Tarifa  (except at weekends) and with less wind
when levante (easterly) wind is blowing

Mandragora

Situated in a small alley behind the main
(biggest) church in Tarifa.
This is one of the more unusual places to
eat in Tarifa. The menu is a mixture of
Moroccan and Spanish cuisine. Very nice.

Trattoria

On the Alameda (gardens in the center of
town)

Very good pizzas and other dishes. Wood
oven.

Santa Fe

Next to La Trattoria.

Back in fashion after several changes of cooks.
Great for crepes and "galletes"  type french
dishes.

Seen on the beach

Hurricane Hotel (tel:956 684919)

One of our favorites for fresh fish, filet steak
and salads.
Great for both salad bar lunch on their
beach bar or dinner on their hotel terrace.
Phone to reserve in the evening.

Posy (trendy) beaches

Valdevaqueros (gladiator beach)

Definetly the place to be seen and where it's all
happening. Car park can get a bit crowded but
perfect place if you want to show off your beautiful
bod.

Hurricane hotel

Vaca Loca (Gary's place)

Go to the Missiana hotel/bar on main street in
the old town and walk down calle San Francisco.
Take the first left.

Small place with a terrace to enjoy barbecued
meat of different types. Looovely !!

Bolonia

This is the next town in the Cadiz direction.
It takes about 30 mins to drive there.

Several good fresh fish restaurants situated next
to the Roman ruins.

Thai restaurant

Down on Los Lances Beach (urbanizacion La
Marina)

Haven't personally tried it yet but we have heard
from several sources that the food is good.

Valdevaqueros

Excellent salad bar-buffet

Souk

This place comes in two parts:

The souk restaurant is situated close to the
Guardia civil quartel (barracks). When coming
from Cadiz turn right at the traffic lights in town
and  follow the road all the way:it is the second
road on the left before the guardia civil, in the
pedestrian street.
The food is mixture of spanish, Moroccan and
Thai dishes, some of which can be a bit sweet,
but atherwise very tasty!!
The souk bar is situated in the La Marina
urbanisation part of town and serves grat
breakfast, including capuccinos (with italian Illy
coffee). follow
this link for map of location.

Spin out
Still one of the nicest places  - grassy area to lie on,
beach bars, school and shop

Busiest beaches

By far the busiest beach in the summer remains Punta
Palomas although Valdevaqueros has become quite
crowded also in the last couple of years.
The kitezone on the south est side of hotel Dos Mares can
also go off in the summer, especially on poniente wind
days.

Bars / Discos

Here again, there are numerous new places which
have opened recently so not all have been "tested".
Please re-visit for continual updates!!

Bar Central

Very popular "people watching" place on the main
road in the old town. Great to have an early evening
drink before moving on to greater things.

Misiana

Next door to the bar central, quite trendy and nicely
decorated. Keep checking your drink prices as these
can very from night to night and waiter to waiter!!

La tribu

Through the arch next to the
traffic lights and half-way
down the hill (Calle La Luz).
Not too shabby for cocktails,
acid jazzy music a qwuick
pizza and some
kitesurfing/windsurfing
videos.

Tres Mares

This place seems to be getting very popular recently and  I
seems to be open into the small hours. definitely needs to
be checked out. You will find it on the beach road just before
100% Fun surf shop, next to Explora

Explora

"Hanging loose" type of place with beach volley court, bar
and exotic furniture shop. Opens mainly in the day and
evening I think . Might open late in the summer, check
opening times.

La Jaima

Late disco next to the football ground open till early hours
with looooud music, chicks. etc, etc...
If you are staying close by, might as well join the party as you
won't be able to sleep.

Juan Luis

Very good if you like pork.
No menu - the owner (bald bloke) will just
bring you dishes until you're full.

Other good places to hang out:
La Ruina
La Sacristia
Soul Cafe (air conditioned)

Don't go away, more to come in our 3rd No bull guide installment !!

Among other things:

All the food delivery and take
away  restaurants with phone
numbers
(when you don't feel like going
out)
including printable menus !

Things to do when there is no wind and you are totally

and much, much more !

ored ...

As a footnote keep in mind that the beaches eastward of
Algeciras are mainly grey "sand" or small pebbles
whereas from Tarifa westwards the beaches are white
(golden) sand.

NB: beach laws: of course there are laws and rules
that forbid dogs on the beach, throwing rubbish, launching
the kite outside the permitted zone etc.. but as always in
Spain, it is difficult to know which laws  to abide to and
which ones everybody just seems to laugh at. Certainly
there are loose dogs everywhere on the beaches,
including pitbulls, rotweilers and others.
If you have kids beware as dog feces carry a germ that can
cause blindness (that is why they are banned on all
european  beaches). If bitten by a dog, don't hesitate to
denounce the owner (denuncia) and if the wound is
bleeding, get yourself to hospital for a check up.
